Touching Flowers
I will touch a hundred flowers
And not pick one.
Edna St. Vincent Millay
For several years I carried a small body worn video camera with me. From time to time, I would attach the bodycam lens to my index finger and touch a flower. This work is constructed from footage of one hundred flower touchings. Each of these one hundred flower videos are subject to the specifics of the flower, my body movement and the environment affecting each video’s duration. These videos are organized chronologically and combined into sets of ten. Each set is subjected to an automated process, a simple algorithm, that selects a specific number of video frames from one video then moves to the next video in that set and so on. The 10 processed sets are assembled to make the finished movie. The first screen in this installation is playing a movie based on a one frame selection. The second screen is playing a movie based on a two-frame selection. The third screen is playing a movie based on a three-frame selection.
